Liz Barclay is a TV presenter, radio broadcaster, producer and writer with an expertise on money and finance, particularly alongside small businesses.
Liz was appointed the Small Business Commissioner in 2021. Her role is to spearhead the national effort to crackdown on poor payment practices affecting small businesses – sometimes these businesses do not receive the money they are owed, and they are forced to shut. The position was first created in 2016 to help these small and medium sized companies secure the payments they need and deserve.
Liz Barclay started her career as an advisor and then CEO with Citizens Advice, before moving into radio and TV production and presenting, specialising in business and consumer affairs. Her experience includes being a Financial Inclusion Commissioner, Chair of the Fair by Design Campaign, a non-executive director of two organisations and a member of the standards board of The Equity Release Council.
Liz works across many industries, working with boards and small businesses to improve governance, trust and culture, inclusion and understanding of customer behaviour. She provides coaching to improve communication and presentation skills, and chairs conferences, both nationally and internationally and has also written several books on business. Her books include Business the Duncan Bannatyne Way: 10 Secrets of the Rags to Riches, Small Business Employment Law for Dummies and Business the Philip Green Way: 10 Secrets of the Billionaire Retail Magnate.
Liz also provides her expertise on finance and small businesses to publications including Moneywise, The Mail, The Express, News of the World, Family Circle and the BBC News Online Business website. She has also written several booklets for the BBC including The Beginner’s Guide to Investment and The Pound for Pound Money Guide.
Liz’s TV experience includes presenting Pound for Pound for BBC2 – a finance programme dealing with everyday financial issues, The Small Business Programme and The Business Hour for the Learning Zone BBC2 – programmes aimed at people running small and medium sized enterprises, and Talking Heads for Discovery Europe – discussing personal issues ranging from bereavement to trust.
She is also a popular voice on the radio, contributing to or presenting In Business and You and Yours for BBC Radio 4, Work it Out, Nightcall and After Hours for BBC Radio 5, as well as Christmas specials for BBC Radio 5 Live from Israel, Bosnia, Croatia, Servia and Hong Kong, Diana’s People and Money Check. She is also the business expert for Talk Radio.
Liz also ran her own web community at moneyagonyaunt.com where she provided information on how to manage your money, how to get out of debt, how to move on from bankruptcy, and the next steps after losing your home.
