Giles Long MBE

Giles Long MBE is one of the most successful and well-respected Paralympic swimmers of our time. His journey to elite success is very different from the typical athlete.

At aged 13, Giles was diagnosed with cancer and he feared that his dreams of being a professional swimmer were shattered – dreams that he has held since the age of seven.

Despite his diagnosis, Giles became a competitive swimmer and broke his first World Record just four years later, aged 17.

In 1996, he had qualified for the 100m Butterfly at the Atlanta Paralympics and was ranked the World number one. Four years later at the 2000 Paralympics, he again took gold, setting a new world record in the process.

He would go on to swim quicker than the world record at the Athens 2004 games, but unfortunately, so did two other people and he returned home having won bronze, eventually retiring from the sport in 2007.

Giles was appointed an MBE in the 2006 New Year Honours list for his services to disabled sport.
